Five years ago I became a pastor. Since then I have seen an epidemic raging across the United Sates and other parts of the world. Not once have I seen any news reports about this outbreak known as, “I know what the Bible says but I believe….” virus. I know that many of you, if not all of you, are saying this is not a real disease and that I should not make light of people’s health issues. Beloved, this is not only a real disease but it is a life threatening disease as well.
Just the other day I was reading a blog where the blogger gave ten points why he did not believe everything that the Bible said. A few of those things were: he did not believe the Bible was inspired by God, he did not believe the Bible explains the earth’s creation and population accurately and he did not believe the Bible has much to say about gender identity and sexual orientation.
There was a lot more but this made me think about this disease and how it has affected so many people. You see, these days most people will tell you that there are many paths to Jesus; however, He said in Matthew 7:13-14 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
The problem I see is that we like our faith the way we want it so we say things like, “I know what the Bible says but I believe….” When we do this we are nullifying the word of God. Nowhere does the Bible say that we can worship on any day that we wish. Nowhere does the Bible say that all I need to do is accept Jesus and then continue my life as I wish.
The next time someone tells you that the rapture is coming or that all I need to be saved is to be a good person, ask them to show you where in the Bible this is stated. Beloved, the only true way to be vaccinated from this deadly illness is to say, “If it is in the Bible, I believe….; if it is not in the Bible, it is not for me.”
The question is what can I do to avoid this dangerous and often deadly illness? The answer is simple: believe and obey. When we believe what we are told in the Bible and continue obeying what it says, we will then understand that the Bible is the word of God. As it sinks into our hearts, we will have the only true cure for the “I know what the Bible says but I believe….” virus. We cannot truly believe, obey and love Him and not be transformed. It is the trusting in His word that leads us down the path of everlasting light.
